Natus Medical Inc. has purchased Global Neuro-Diagnostics (GND) based in Flower Mound, Texas, just outside of Dallas-Ft. Worth. With the acquisition, Pleasanton, Calif.-based Natus enters the neurodiagnostic services market.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Natus said in a recent press release that GND was profitable in 2014 with revenue of approximately $7 million.
GND’s services offer patients a way to complete routine video electroencephalogram (EEG) testing, which can be performed at the home, hospital or physician’s office. The service also provides comprehensive reporting and support to the physician, according to Natus officials.
An EEG test detects electrical activity in the brain using small, flat metal discs (electrodes) attached to the scalp. Brain cells communicate via electrical impulses and are active all the time, and the activity shows up as wavy lines on an EEG recording. An EEG is one of the main diagnostic tests for epilepsy, according to data from the Mayo Clinic, and also may play a role in diagnosing other brain disorders.
“GND brings video neurodiagnostics to our growing service portfolio,” said Jim Hawkins, president and CEO of Natus. “GND successfully pioneered this service in Texas and we look forward to now expanding it to our customers throughout the United States.”
Natus provides products and services used in the screening, detection, treatment, monitoring and tracking of common medical ailments in newborn care, hearing impairment, neurological dysfunction, epilepsy, sleep disorders, and balance and mobility disorders. The company reported $355.8 million in revenues last year, a 3 percent jump compared with its 2013 sales.
