Insulet began full U.S. commercial launch of the Omnipod 5 automated insulin delivery (AID) system with Dexcom G7 continuous glucose monitor (CGM).
The company also revealed limited market release of the Omnipod 5 app for iPhone and Omnipod 5 availability in France with Dexcom 6 CGM compatibility. The system was also launched with expanded CGM integrations in the UK and the Netherlands.
The tubeless AID system communicates with a CGM and proactively corrects for highs and protects against lows. The waterproof device also has mobile app control.
The company plans to release an updated starter kit that includes a new Pod compatible with Dexcom G6 and G7, as well as a controlled with user-selectable Dexcom CGM options. Insulet will make a free remote software upgrade to U.S. Omnipod 5 users starting the week of July 29.
The Omnipod app for iPhone makes Insulet the first company with a tubeless AID system with control from a compatible Android or iOS smartphone. The company will communicate broadly when the app is available on the App Store.
Insulet first plans to launch the app with Dexcom G6 and Dexcom G7 will follow.
“Achieving these milestones demonstrates our Company’s ongoing commitment to making our life-changing diabetes technology more accessible around the world,” said Jim Hollingshead, Insulet’s president and CEO. “With our recent expansion into France, Omnipod 5 is now accessible to the majority of our European customers. The integration of Dexcom G7 and the iPhone mobile app in the U.S. enables more options for those considering Omnipod 5 for their insulin delivery.”
